Ask AI about one topic
An AI Mode chat can be about one of the site's topics, such as Mortgages & Rates or Baseball. Its answers then keep to that subject, and the results column searches only inside it.
#Start a chat about a topic
- On a topic's page, select Ask AI about this topic. See A topic's page.
- In AI Mode, select a topic in the Topics list on the left. The chat switches to it on the spot, without losing the conversation so far.
- When your search was inside a topic, Dive deeper in AI Mode under the AI Overview keeps that topic.
A chat about Mortgages & Rates: the topic shows above the starter questions, in the message box, and in the results column.
- 1The topic this chat is about
- 2The topic in your message box; the × removes it
- 3Results come from inside the topic
- 4Pick another topic from the list
#What changes
- Talking about on the empty screen names the topic and what it covers. Select the name to open the topic's page.
- The message box shows the topic as a label, such as Topic: Real Estate › Residential › Mortgages & Rates.
- The results column shows the latest articles in the topic, and later the results for your questions inside it. In the news now lists the topic's latest headlines.
- Answers are written with the topic in mind.
If the topic has no articles for your words, the column says "Nothing on ... yet" and shows results from the whole site instead.
#Change or remove the topic
- Select another topic in the Topics list on the left.
- Select × on the topic label in the message box to stop limiting the chat to it.
The conversation carries on either way; the next answer and the results follow the new choice.
#Common questions
Does changing the topic start a new chat?
Not when you pick it from the Topics list or remove it with ×: the conversation continues. Opening AI Mode from a different topic's page, with a different topic in the address, starts a new chat.
Does a topic make answers more accurate?
It keeps them on the subject and makes the sources more relevant, which usually helps. It does not make the AI infallible: check the sources as always.
